Situation

Following receipt of a number of material improvement notices from the Worksafe Regulator, my client concluded that sustainable improvements in risk management were needed.

Objectives

  1. Embed a sustainable risk culture through implementation of frameworks and practices consistent with AS 31000: 2018.

  2. Improve organisational resilience to enable the company to thrive as a going concern beyond current management’s tenure.

Actions taken

  • Established context including PESTLE, capability, and stakeholder analyses.

  • Confirmed business objectives.

  • Developed risk frameworks, including risk matrices, governance arrangements, code of conduct, roles & responsibilities, education requirements, obligations, reporting templates, communication & consultation plan including ‘speak up’ mechanisms.

  • Assessed risks to business objectives and developed risk treatment plans.

  • Supported partial embedding of risk treatment plans including establishing management governance arrangements, launched code of conduct, supported enhancement of onboarding & induction program, and coached workers and supervisors through application of several risk treatments.

Result

  • Addressed all regulatory requirements.

  • Measurably, improved risk culture and employee engagement predicated on embedding of tone from the top, code of conduct, risk accountabilities, communication & consultation, and management governance arrangements.

  • Mitigated several previously unidentified risks.

  • Developed strategic plan to ensure the ongoing sustainability and long-term viability of the business beyond the tenure of current management.
